4 out of 5 stars good, but...   August 13, 2010

This is a good treatment of the subject as others have described. However, it is written as if what goes on in nursing school is always rational when it isn't. The book doesn't address how to deal with incompetent profs or bullying, both of which are common in many nursing schools. Granted, we students can't change how nursing schools function, but I think it is better to know what you are getting into and that includes both good and bad.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic find! Incredibly helpful   July 12, 2009

I am beginning nursing school this fall and this book was a wonderful find! I cannot emphasize enough how helpful this book has been and will continue to be in the next couple of years for me. Many guides focus on how to "survive" nursing school, but Atkins makes a point to help you get the most from your time in school.

There are so many helpful tips in this book, I have highlighting on nearly every page! I already know I am most nervous for clinical rotations, and Atkins provides an incredible amount of advice to help ease the anxiety and stress that will undoubtedly come with them. The book also contains many useful tips from other nurses and nursing faculty.

I would recommend this book to Everyone heading to (or already in) nursing school - regardless of the type of degree. This book was fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of a Nursing student's precious time!   June 22, 2009

Highly recommended for people considering, applying or enrolled in a Nursing program.

The central theme is getting the most out of your nursing education, and hit other important points for me, such as:

- Getting the most out of clinical time
- Instructor perspective, communicating with your professor
- How to handle worry about infectious disease or blood and guts
- Nursing school v. Medical school
- Are Nurses pushed around?
- Diversity of Nursing
- How to submit a strong, competitive application
- Writing papers, making presentations, study habits and note taking.
- Time management for nursing students

This book is the real deal. Relevant, nicely written and informative. Worthy of a nursing students precious time. I found it to be a fast, easy read and actually quite a page turner.

This should be required reading for nursing students.

This book is the best navigation system to help guide you through the challenging roads of a nursing curriculum. It has given me the confidence I needed to excel during clinical experiences and really impress my instructors.
