Amazon.com essential video
Sydney Pollack's 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen's gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie   December 24, 2008
As always Meryl Streep shows the quality of her acting ability. She is superb, one of the best of contemporary actresses. Redford is good when he acts, awful when he tries to be a politician.

5 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICIENT NOSTALGIC ROMANCE   November 25, 2008
Out of Africa
The story of a Danish woman (Meryl Streep) who finds herself running a farm in Africa from 1913 after her husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) decides to opt out for the life of a hunter. The first half is brilliantly
paced and immaculately acted, but the greatness rather drifts away in the second half, somewhat aided by Robert Redford, who just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the film. Streep and her Danish accent are amazing, while Brandauer, Suzanna Hamilton, Michael Kitchen and Michael Gough offer really first-rate support. Intelligently scripted and beautifully shot on location by David Watkin, Out of Africa proves a moving, stimulating and entertaining experience. Winner of SEVEN ACADEMY AWARDS, including Best Film and Best Director.

5 out of 5 stars Out of Africa   November 17, 2008
Watching this movie was an amazing surprise. I had heard of it but never had the opportunity to watch it. It was beautiful, and a wonderful story.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!   October 15, 2008
Classic movie that never ceases to entertain. A beautiful love story, beautifully told...still makes me cry.

5 out of 5 stars So good   October 9, 2008
I remember going to see this in the theater. It is still a vivid love story - between her and Africa, as well as her and Denis.
